Teaching

My professional life in music has been evenly split between performing and teaching. I hold university degrees in Music and Literature, so my experience of more than fifty years in performance and teaching has been built on solid foundations that I have continued to enrich through the many encounters I have been fortunate to have had along my musical journey.

I offer lessons for cittern (early music and traditional music) and fingerstyle guitar for intermediate to advanced players. I can help you with everything from technique to arranging.

I have been teaching cittern and guitar for a long time, and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that learning should be fun. Style and repertoire doesn’t matter as long as we approach it with the right attitude – that together we’re going to become more expressive musicians, and have fun doing it.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s individual needs and aspirations. Students often choose to learn via music and musicians they admire, and from my own experience this can be a very effective method as it allows you to develop a repertoire while giving you a springboard for further investigation of technique and music theory, if that interests you.

I know that my relationship with music generally, and the cittern and guitar in particular, have had a positive influence on my life. Studying music and improving as a musician has never failed to make me feel happy and fulfilled.

I no longer teach beginners, preferring to work with folks who already have the fundamentals and are eager to expand their horizons. I offer one free lesson for us to see whether studying with me is right for you. If you’re going to be taking lessons online, it also gives us the chance to sort out any connection issues.
